The production of skin care products is growing fast but what to be considered by pregnant women before buying pregnancy-safe products is going to be explained in this article.

What Are Pregnancy-Safe Products 

Pregnant women should consider the ingredients of the products before buying it. The product women who are pregnant or expecting to be pregnant should buy are supposed to be FREE from the following ingredients. The beauty ingredients during pregnancy which are not supposed not to be in the product.

Vitamin A derivatives.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, that is naturally present in many foods. Vitamin A is important for normal vision, immune system, reproduction, and growth and development. Vitamin A also helps your heart, lungs, and other organs work properly.

Vitamin A derivatives such as Retinoids, Retin-A, Retinyl palmitate are considered to be potential teratogens and should be strictly avoided during every phase of pregnancy. The chances of foetal abnormalities are high with consumption of Vitamin A derivatives, hence both oral retinoids and topical applications should be completely prohibited.

Source of Vitamin A are Carrots, beef liver, sweet potatoes, spinach, pumpkin, cheese.

 

Whitening Agents or Depigmenting Agents.

Hydroquinone is safe and beneficial for short term use, though there are recent findings that it can actually cause a syndrome, making your skin discolored.

However, there is a chance to cause Ochronosis due to buildup of Homogentisic acid especially if you are among the darker skinned people. Some Dermatologist’s recommend using for four months and using milder creams for four months and rinse and repeat.

Avoid contact with the eye and refrain from using with Benzoyl Peroxide or Resorcinol.

Product with high Hydroquinone are Hydroquinone 10% Cream, Hydroquinone 6% Cream, Hydroquinone 8% Cream

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is naturally derived or biosynthesized from bark of the willow tree. While it does lightly exfoliate the top layer of your skin, the real purpose of Salicylic Acid is to penetrate deeper into the skin to exfoliate oils and dead skin in your pores.

Salicylic Acid has a lot of anti-inflammatory agents and is usually used to treat acne. The use of salicylic acid or aspirin should be avoided if pregnant.

You can find concentrations from 1-10%, but 2% is the most common. Higher concentrations haven’t shown better results

Synthetic Fragrance

Perfumes and other fragrances may contain a class of ingredients called phthalates, which could be harmful for baby. Phthalates may disrupt the development of male reproductive organs. Also, sometime it may cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

Sunscreens.

Sunscreens are either chemical or mineral. Mineral would be preferred as they have in zinc and titanium oxide

No type of sunscreen protects your skin 100%, which means even if you do apply sunscreen you’ll likely get a little tanned anyway, if you get exposed to UV rays a lot. Some sunscreens containing retinol or its derivatives that has with it.

It should be avoided as retinol and its derivatives are teratogenic and can cause harm in pregnancy. They should be stopped well in advance of getting pregnant. At least 4 weeks before getting pregnant. There are studies that associate them with hormone disruption.

Aluminium chloride hexahydrate

Negative effects are limited to skin redness and/or irritation. Also, Aluminium chloride hexahydrate is associated with bone damage, anemia, and constant tiredness during pregnancy. Avoid using skin care product that contain the chemical, then use pregnancy-safe products.

 Formaldehyde.

Among of the chemical which are mostly included in skin care product which are for hair treatment.

Pregnant women should not go for this hair treatment. The products used for straightening may emit some gases, which are not suitable for pregnant women. Avoid any chemical hair treatments during pregnancy as they may contain formaldehyde.

You need to use sodium chloride-free shampoos and conditioners for washing and maintaining your hair after the treatment. which are pregnancy-safe products.

Glycolic Acid

This among of the product which a pregnant woman should never use for the safety of the unborn baby. Therefore, natural skin care during pregnancy is very essential for the baby growth and mother health.
